Screen Studio changelog
Updated 2026-09-04 · v0.2.13
Screen Studio updates itself: it checks on launch, and when there is something new you get a macOS notification plus a small badge on the menu bar icon — one click to upgrade. This page records what changed.
Releases that only touched internals or this website are not listed. The version you are running is in Settings → General.
v0.2.13
- Font picker for text annotations. 37 families in 5 groups (sans, condensed & display, serif, mono, handwriting & decorative) and 5 weights. Pick from the toolbar or from the bar next to a text block; every row in the picker is drawn in its own typeface. The last font you used is remembered between sessions.
- 12 new backdrops. 15 in total for video and 16 for the stitch tray, grouped as Dark · Neutral · Warm · Cool · Vivid. Gradients can now run diagonally instead of only top‑to‑bottom. The picker is a grid of colour swatches rather than a list of names.
- Freeform layout now shows what you will export. The canvas draws the real backdrop, outer padding, corner radius and shadow — previously it only showed the editor's dark chrome, so you had to export to see the result. Toggling annotation mode no longer jumps the frame either.
- Click an active tool again to turn it off. The mouse goes back to select/move instead of drawing. Also added Esc, right‑click, and a shortcut per tool (V A T R O P H N E B C).
- Scroll to zoom the timeline. Hold ⌃ and scroll, or pinch on the trackpad — the frame under the pointer stays put as you zoom.
- Emoji picker rebuilt. Hover feedback, the emoji you are using is marked, and a filter box for the groups.
- Fixed: diagonal backdrops lost their four corners in the exported image. They looked complete on screen, so this only showed up when you opened the saved file.
- Fixed: downgrading the app wiped every recording setting. A backdrop from a newer build broke the whole settings file, not just the backdrop.
- Fixed: tooltips on the annotation tools did not appear.
v0.2.11
- Zoom in every image canvas. Zoom buttons, ⌘− / ⌘+ / ⌘0, trackpad pinch and ⌃ + scroll — in the stitch preview, the annotation canvas, freeform layout and the markup window.
- Emoji stickers. 163 emoji in 8 groups, and you can type one that is not on the list; the same picker serves image markup and the annotation layer while recording.
- A video library inside the editor. The right rail has a Library tab listing your recordings (click to append to the timeline, drag onto the lane to insert in place) and a Clip tab with the selected clip's properties: source in/out points, position on the timeline, duration, source file, reorder, reveal in Finder, delete.
- Timelines can mix several recordings. One timeline now takes clips from different source files and exports them as a single video.
- Fixed: changing the colour and thickness of an existing annotation. Previously you could not recolour a text block after typing it — you had to delete it and start again.
- Fixed: the preview now matches the exported image. Turning annotation mode off used to draw the raw stitched image, so the annotations looked gone, and then reappeared in the export.
v0.2.9
- Tabbed Settings window. General, Recording, Screenshots, Shortcuts, License — instead of one endlessly scrolling list.
- Screenshot library. Browse what you have captured inside the app, reopen a shot to mark it up or drop it into the stitch tray.
- Anonymous usage statistics. The app sends action counters so we know which features get used — no screen content, no file names, and one checkbox turns it off. Details on the privacy page.
v0.2.7
- Export dialog. Pick MP4, MOV or GIF; original / 1080p / 720p; 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or 4:3 framing; mute the audio; choose where it lands, with a percentage and a cancel button. See how to export a GIF.
- Per-display selection overlay. Region dragging, the recording-area indicator and the annotation layer now behave correctly on multi-monitor setups — one overlay per display.
- Countdown, pause, discard and a floating control bar, together with the webcam bubble, microphone picker and keystroke overlay.
- Screenshots: self-timer and full markup. Wait 3 / 5 / 10 seconds; arrows, boxes, ellipses, pen, highlighter, text, auto-incrementing number badges, blur redaction and crop. See the screenshot and markup guide.
- The stitch tray survives quitting the app, and you can drag or paste images in from outside.
- Redo for the on-screen annotation layer, plus a first-launch permission walkthrough.
- Settings are remembered between launches. Capture mode, zoom level, backdrop, webcam, audio, image format.
v0.2.5
- A "cancel everything" shortcut (⌥⌘0). Stuck in a region overlay or the annotation layer? One key returns the Mac to normal.
- Fixed a bug where only the last-registered shortcut worked.
v0.2.3
- A shortcut per mode. ⌥⌘1–⌥⌘3 to record full screen / region / window, ⌥⌘4–⌥⌘6 to capture — they fire immediately, no panel needed.
- Update notices as a macOS notification plus a badge on the menu bar icon.
v0.2.2
- Display name changed to "7 Screen Studio".
v0.2.1
First public release, signed with a Developer ID and notarized.
- Real-time auto-zoom that follows the cursor and your clicks, and zooms back out when you stop. Set the zoom level to 1.0× to switch it off entirely.
- Record the full screen, a region or a single window, pick which display, with a persistent border showing the recorded area.
- Backdrops, padding, rounded corners and shadow, plus a synthetic cursor that scales with the zoom and ripples on click.
- System audio and microphone, synchronised to the ScreenCaptureKit clock.
- Multi-clip timeline editor: split, cut, duplicate, drag to reorder, trim edges, undo/redo, step frame by frame.
- An annotation layer you draw straight onto the screen you are recording: arrows, boxes, pen, highlighter, text and stickers.
- Screenshots with a direct selection overlay, a floating card after capture, markup and a stitching editor.
- Auto-update through Sparkle and remappable global shortcuts.
